It doesn't matter which one of the hotels Melaka offers that you stay in. You'll soon realize that it is an area overflowing with culture. Discovered in the early 1400s by a young Hindu prince, the town became a renowned trading port and because of this, many foreign countries took an interest in its worth. The diverse cultures that have passed through the area throughout its history have left their influence on Melaka and this is partly why the town is such an interesting place to visit.

Malaysia is divided into two by the South China Sea. Melaka is situated in the Malay Peninsula, or West Malaysia, as it is more commonly known. This part of the country is located in South East Asia and borders with Thailand. It is a small Malaysian state, found along the coast in the southern region of the country.

Once you have checked into one of the hotels Melaka has many varied attractions for you to experience during your stay. An obvious place to start is with the natural beauty the Malaysian coast provides with its selection of beautiful islands. The largest of these is Pulau Besar Island, five miles south of Melaka town. To reach the island you need to travel to Umbai and from here you can take a short trip by boat. When you arrive on the island you can explore the white sandy beaches, clear blue waters or lush jungle. You can relax on the island by doing a spot of fishing or golf and if you prefer, there are water sports available such as water-skiing and snorkeling.

Palau Upeh is another of the islands and is situated within Melaka, near Klebang town. Palau Upeh Island was used during World War II as a lookout for invading ships. Pirates also used the island as a hideout but its most famous role has been as a safe haven for turtles, specifically the rare Hawksbill species, which are often spotted on the island. There is also an ancient well and water sports facilities to be found here.

For a more cultural experience, Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is a very popular attraction. This is Malaysia's oldest traditional Chinese temple and is still used for worship today. The temple dates back to the mid-1600s and has been recently restored, for which it was given an award for outstanding, architectural restoration. The traditional Chinese building work is where the majority of its appeal lies. The temple, which is dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, is beautifully crafted and there are ornate artistic features throughout the building, such as the colorful figures on the roof made from pieces of porcelain.

If you are planning to visit a museum, an interesting choice is the Cultural Museum, as you will find it in the Sultanate Palace. The palace officially became open to the public in 1986 and is a detailed replica of Sultan Mansur Shah's palace. An important figure in Malaysia's history, Sultan Mansur Shah was a famous sultan who ruled the city from 1456 until 1477. Inside is the museum, which displays Malaysia's history and cultural heritage. Here, you can find chambers with exhibits of weapon displays and decorative arts. There are galleries that explore the clash between the warriors, Hang Tuah and Hang Jebat and several more exhibits, such as traditional costumes, prints of the Sultanate and traditional Malay jewelry and wedding dress. The Cultural Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday.

You can find interesting animals in Malaysia but to see them all in one place, head to the Zoo. This zoo receives almost 500,000 visitors annually and is definitely worth a visit. Established in 1963, the Zoo is the second largest zoo in the country and houses over 1,200 animals. Animals include rhinoceros, bear, lion and the Malayan tiger. On weekends, the zoo adds some extra activities and this is when you can take a ride on an elephant and stroll around the zoo until well into the night, viewing the nocturnal animals. There is also a zoology museum, a souvenir shop and eateries on site. D'Pelican Restaurant above the Ayer Keroh Lake is a pleasant place to dine on some traditional cuisine, while watching the elephants. Melaka Zoo is open daily and the Night Zoo takes place from early evening until almost midnight.

Most hotels Melaka has to offer, provide free Wi-Fi services or Internet availability. You'll also find that a fair amount of the hotels boast use of a spa or outdoor swimming pool.
